Beginning in 1909-1910 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as one of the original, grinding equipment manufacturers with their original "soap stone" grinding wheel machines, Blanchard Machine manufactured over 16,000 Blanchard Grinding machines. Since then, Blanchard Machine has become synonymously recognized as the quality machining manufacturer of high horsepower, rotary grinding machines where maximum production, finest finish, and accuracy of parallelism and flatness are required on raw metal, cast iron, alloy and carbon steel parallel surfaces. The Blanchard Grinders have become so accepted as the leaders in the field of rotary surface grinding that specifications often call for surfaces to be "Blanchard Ground." Blanchard Grinding is well known for the trademark "cross-hatched" surface finish pattern that comes from the wheel turning motion and the rotational movement of the work piece upon the magnetic chuck, whereby both the leading and trailing edges of the grinding wheel are in contact with the work piece.
Precision Grinding has been offering large Blanchard Grinding Services and large Surface Grinding Services since 1971. We grind most sizes of alloy and carbon steel plates, carbon and tool steel bars, specialty steel parts, and welded fabrications that are normally considered "heavier, precision steel parts" versus "micro finished parts." For steel plate grinding, including large ground plate, small, specialty ground plates, and precision parts, Precision Grinding has two of the most recognized Blanchard grinders. Our No. 54-100, Blanchard Rotary Surface Grinder with a 54" head diameter, a 100" OD magnetic chuck, and a 128" corner-to-corner swing has a vertical height capacity of 47" and can handle up to 14,000 lbs on the table. Our No. 32-60, Blanchard has a table weight capacity of 6,000 lbs and has a 32" head diameter, a 60" one piece steel magnetic chuck, and a 61" swing clearance inside the water guards providing high accuracy and high production repeatability. Dimensional tolerances are met by shimming the workpiece, flipping the workpiece, and sparking out until tolerances are met. Common parallelism tolerances for Blanchard Grinding range from within .003" to within .010", often times depending upon the size of the part. The thinnest parts often require slower speeds and additional time spent. Normal Flatness tolerances for LARGE STEEL PARTS may range from within .003" to within .020" dependant upon the thickness, length, and width. Blanchards can achieve the flattest tolerances for smaller, heavier pieces. Stress relieving the part in our on-site furnace is recommended prior to grinding in order to meet critical flatness demands. Thickness, parallelism and flatness tolerances are normally considered with most quotes, while "square" is considered when the sides and edges are both ground. We also offer Single sided grinding and "Grinding to Cleanup" options.
We can grind precision proto-types, and we can produce large numbers of parallels, base plates, die plates, quick die change plates (QDC plates,) mold plates, mounting plates, wear plates, liner plates, sub plates, bolster plates and fabrications. We use two 10-ton overhead cranes above these seven grinders in this bay and multiple jib cranes with magnets stationed at the grinders in order to meet demanding production requirements. Several more 10-ton cranes are located throughout our plant in order to move steel between our Flame cutting and plasma cutting machines, through the deburring stations, into the Annealing / Stress Relieving Furnace, and throughout our Machine Shop department. When grinding large base plates, machine bases, and large precision ground parts, we can handle your job. Ground plate is our specialty, and we have some of the largest and most durable precision grinders in the Southeast, along with some of the most experienced and skilled grinding craftsmen and machinists in Alabama. Please, call us when you need steel plate processing from beginning to end.

Mattison Vertical Spindle Reciprocating Grinder
Precision Grinding maintains two Mattison 400-S Vertical Spindle Surface Grinders. These two grinding tables can handle extremely long parts, up to 220" long. They can also handle many parts at a time, which allows us to provide excellent pricing for large quantity runs. Both of these tables produce high accuracy and are especially suited for grinding long steel bars - 4140, A36, HR Steel Bar, and tool steel bar.
Our 36" x 168" Mattison Grinder 400-S has the capacity to produce ground parts up to 24" tall. Our second, unique, 48" x 200" Mattison 400-S Reciprocating Grinder has further been modified with a 410 HP motor and is fully capable of step grinding up to 240", and in some cases 260". This 410 hp motor allows us to add pressure while slowing down the feed rate which increases the efficiencies while preventing heat buildup and plate burning. Again, we produce surface ground parts to incredibly close tolerances. Many times we can reach ± .001 parallelism, ± .002 per foot flatness, and as normally requested, to within ± .001-.005 thickness. Our production grinders along with our qualified machine operators allow us to grind these surfaces for you right the first time.

Surface grinding is the grinding of flat surfaces. Alternative methods for machining that work similar to those produced by surface grinding include milling and to some extent, planing. The advantages that surface grinding provides over milling, planing or other metal-cutting techniques include especially, obtaining a higher degree of dimensional accuracy and desired form of the work surface (flat to as close as .002 per foot and parallel to close to ±.001 inch tolerances) in a more consistent manner. Our two Mattison Horizontal Spindle Surface Grinders are especially ideal for sharpening shear blades, for machined parts such as cylinder heads or blocks, small tools, surface plates, mold plates, stripper plates, sub plates, specialty welding dies, bolster plates, and for general manufacturing and tool room requirements such as regrinding or reconditioning large hydraulic shears or heavy steel cutting blades. As well, grinding is more applicable to very hard and abrasion resistant work pieces without significant deterioration in strength of the steel and without promotion of excessive, undue stress or heat buildup in the steel. Furthermore, surface grinding provides a fine finish and produces finished products much more economically, especially when adapted to process automation for large volumes for a wide variety of steel components and steel parts.
With a large in stock steel plate inventory, we can produce most any order of ground plates and ship your order to you within 1 - 4 weeks. Precision Grinding supplies cut plates, machined plates, ground plates, and finished plates including, die shoes, die plates and quick die change plates, base plates, sub plates, bolster plates, wear plates, liner plates, sole plates, stripper plates, grout plates, and any other kind of steel plate that requires flame cutting, machining, grinding, and/or finishing. On-site, we have a furnace, specifically for stress relieving and steel annealing. When you need
ground steel plate, including steel grinding or regrinding plate of any type for a new or a reconditioned machine or for any structural plate or any steel part, please, call Precision Grinding at 1-888-We-Grind. We are a full-service steel plate service center with over 60,000 square feet of space, and we can handle your order.
